Are We Still in Touch? Workshop

April 27 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Are We Still in Touch?: A Workshop on the Power of Self-Directed Touch

This is a workshop on touch or physical contact, physical contact, or touch. Personal, self-directed, caring, resourceful touch. The secret is that we’re not coming in physical contact with each other. “How is that possible?”, you may ask. Hopefully we will sense!

Join Dr. Christina Kapadocha at The LightHouse & Gardens for an enlightening practice exploring the profound benefits of self-directed touch on mental health, wellbeing and creativity. Discover how personal touch can become a powerful tool for self-care and expression, even in the absence of physical contact with others.

As the facilitator, Christina will guide participants through simple and engaging methods, inviting them to participate at their comfort level. Whether you prefer active involvement or observation, there’s a place for everyone in this transformative experience.

The ‘Are We Still in Touch?’ workshop unfolds in four parts:

  1. Introduction
  2. Group workshop prompts
  3. Reflective break with a creative writing prompt
  4. Facilitated group sharing and discussion

Throughout the workshop, participants will delve into the nuances of self-care through touch. From observing the intricacies of their own hand movements to exploring points of contact with the space, they’ll embark on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment guided by Christina’s expertise as a theatre practitioner-researcher and somatic movement educator/therapist.

This workshop draws from Christina’s artistic-research project on the benefits of touch as an embodiment method, part of the University of Essex research activities. Towards the further development of the project, attendees will have the opportunity to provide consent for recording at the beginning of the workshop, and their consent will be respected and negotiable throughout.

The workshop is designed to cater to the unique needs of every participant. It may be of particular interest to embodiment practitioners, health/mental health professionals, carers, wellbeing advisors, artists, educators, therapists, community leaders and activists, as well as individuals from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Don’t miss this opportunity to reconnect with yourself and unlock the transformative power of self-directed touch. Reserve your spot today for one or more of the following dates/times:

  • Saturday April 27, 11:30 am – 1pm
  • Saturday May 25, 11:30 am – 1pm
  • Sunday June 23, 4:30 – 6 pm

Please note:

  • The content for all three workshops will be the same. Nevertheless, feel free to sign up for more than one session, as the work is shaped differently in response to the individuals and needs in each group.
  • Spaces in each workshop are limited. However, multiple sessions are available to accommodate all community members who reserve a spot.
  • This workshop is for adults over 18 years. If you wish to bring along a family member under 18 years, you would be kindly asked to offer additional consent on their behalf. Attendees under 18 are not considered active participants, and no feedback will be sought from them.
